A new ruling in Oregon court has made it possible to allow someone to petition for legally choosing to not be identified by male or female, but rather non-binary, which is a huge leap of progress for transgender rights.
Although the petition wasn’t received all too well, the proceeding is the first of it’s kind in the history of the United States.
The petitioner, Jamie Shupe, who got the ball rolling on this movement is a retired US Army sergeant who wanted to be recognized as female despite male body parts. The Army eventually gave in to Jamie’s wishes.Jamie now prefers to not go by either gender, even after undergoing hormone treatments to become a woman.
Jamie went to court presenting documents by her doctors that stated Jamie is neither man nor woman.
Oregon doesn’t limit gender identification to male or female only, for many years changing your name and changing your gender on paperwork in Oregon was an easy, painless process.
Jamie moved to Oregon specifically because of it’s open transgender community base.
The fight to have gender neutrality become the norm is still ongoing, but cases like these are small successes leading towards a more open way of thinking.
